Grand Papillon by CharlotteXXI Grand Papillon by CharlotteXXI
When the crooks tried to harass her, they thought she was just an ordinary schoolgirl. The next day, they were found dead, throats sliced, guts exploded.

Trixinus #1: Grand Papillon.

A more demonic side of a character I've been drawing.

In order to keep this critique somewhat organized, I'll use the rating chart DA uses, to touch on the various aspects of the picture individually, and , hopefully, tie the critique together by the end of it.

Only being able to go on your brief story does limit my ability to perceive your aim beyond an event that has already happened, namely the murder of the people who had accosted her previously. This leaves it up to my interpretation as to what is to happens next or what is happening now, which, while visually self explanatory on one hand, is ambiguous on the other. However, while this was an initial set back, it sets up for later in a positive way, which I'll cover in the Impact section.

As far as originality goes, the concept is solid enough to stand on it's own merit, but is somewhat diminished by the fact this type of theme, namely girls with swords and magic powers, is already well established in the genre of Japanese animation and manga. So, then, the issue becomes whether or not you, the artist, were able to do something unique or different, and I feel that you have, which I'll cover in the Technique section.

This is the area where most of the decision making and forming of my opinion and critique is based on, and also where your art shines the most. This picture is fairly high quality, and it required me to completely full-view it to in order to pick up some of the more minute details; this is good because it allows me to understand and gauge the level of commitment and effort, on your part, to make this picture stand out. Rather than an oh-so typical CG bucket-fill job or basic color set, you've taken the painter's approach, and that wins extra points with me because to be able to draw and color like a painter would entails far more commitment, time, understanding, skill, ability and attention to detail than typical, standard CG work would require.

You clearly understand the concept of color variation, value, shading, light sources, anatomy, etc, and the time consuming need to leave no outlines, only sold color, as is part of the process of rending a traditional looking, yet digital work. Nothing about this art looks artificial or synthetic, and only artists who have a working knowledge of painting would be able to carry this over into the digital realm.

To be balanced and fair, however, I do need to say that while you can paint effectively, there are some areas in this work that are lackluster or could have otherwise benefited from some additional time and effort. For example, the effect of sword is lovely, but the wings and eye, which seem to be tied to same power, are not as vibrant and do not stand out nearly as much. While one could say that the wings are obscured and shadowed by the lack of light behind her, you could have taken that opportunity to take advantage of the darker area of the cave by lighting up some of the rocks with the glow of the wings the way the sword does the same thing; there wouldn't have been much space for the wings to achieve said effect, so simply making them brighter would have helped.

Having said that, however, it is a minimal, and not a significant impact against my opinion on the subject of the wings and eye. With the eye, such illumination would not have been necessary, unless perhaps the actual iris, assuming it is the source of said illumination. I wouldn't want to assume that simply because its a different color than her right eye.

Overall, its a solid work, and you have no where to go but up; you're painting at this level of quality now, so even just 6 months or less from now, you will have achieved an even better master over the craft.

As was stated in the Vision section, the aftermath of the murders is somewhat ambiguous- she could kill again, or not; its not certain. I think what I'm getting at is that the concept doesn't seem, to me anyways, to follow itself through to conclusion. Because you drew her after she killed them, and this isn't an action scene, one can take away from this so many different possibilities, obviously not for what has happened, but what is to come. I think that this excites me, actually, mostly because she's a school girl and has either alot of explaining to do, or alot of covering up to do; how would she go about that while trying to live a normal life and dealing with these seemingly demonic powers, I wonder, and how does she keep these powers a secret now. Is she in the cave because thats where she dumped the bodies, or is she here because its the only safe place she could find to manifest her powers, I wonder.

All these ideas excite my imagination, and practically beg for a sequel. So, while the Vision suffered a lower mark in this area, for the reasons stated in that section, the Impact does a great deal better because of the power of suggestion and implication the picture has, thanks to the dark shadows, eerie lights, and a seemingly normal girl, who is anything but.

There are some minor issues with the technical execution, and some features were not taken full advantage of, but you've more than made up for it with the quality, effort, and impact, all of which gift the viewer.

Good job and keep up the good work! :)

Lovely details! The coloring and blending of this work is off the charts! I find it really amazing that glowing sword! It is so well made and has a very nice 3D aspect. I also like how the lightning was applied in this drawing and how it fits pretty well and contrasts so well with the darker spots
